THE STOP

Make the journey truly part of the experience.

Travelling between New Zealand’s North and South Islands need not be simply a transfer. Include an additional landing between the North and South Islands, for surprisingly little additional cost.

Pause in

Marlborough: An exceptional vineyard lunch.

Aoraki Mt Cook: A landscape you might otherwise pass over.

Hawke's Bay: A round at Cape Kidnappers, or lunch above the bay.

What an additional landing asks of your day.

Auckland to Queenstown. The dotted line is the direct routing. Select a stop to see how far it truly takes you from it.

Marlborough

2 hr in the air. Additional flying: 20 min. On the ground: An afternoon. Blenheim sits almost directly beneath the Auckland to Queenstown track, making it the least demanding stop in the country and the one most guests are surprised by.

Paraparaumu

2 hr 10 in the air. Additional flying: 30 min. On the ground: Half a day. Paraparaumu sits almost on the direct line, with the airfield beside the course. Eighteen holes on a classic links and lunch before continuing south.

Hawke's Bay

2 hr 05 in the air. Additional flying: 25 min. On the ground: A round, or lunch. Thirty five minutes from Auckland, though east of the track, so it asks more of the day than Marlborough. Best when the stop is the reason for the journey.

Mt Cook

2 hr in the air. Additional flying: 20 min. On the ground: A day, or a night. A landing at Mt Cook saves more than six hours of driving from Queenstown. A scenic flight, a picnic on the mountain, or the more adventurous options on the glacier, before continuing south.

Direct

1 hr 40. Additional flying: None. On the ground: None. Directly through. On occasion that is the right answer, and we will say so.

An additional landing starts from NZ$2,700 plus GST for a stop of up to five hours at an airport such as Blenheim or Taupō. Longer stops and larger airports are quoted individually.

Where you might pause

Marlborough

Blenheim

An exceptional vineyard lunch among the vines that produce the wine most of the world associates with New Zealand. The region lies almost exactly on the line between Auckland and Queenstown, which makes it the most natural pause of all.

Tailored to each party. Most popular is a wine tour taking in Cloudy Bay and a second vineyard, with lunch.

Auckland to Blenheim: 1 hour

Blenheim to Queenstown: 1 hour

Paraparaumu Beach

Kāpiti Coast, on the way south

A classic links, among the highest rated courses in the country, with the airfield beside it and almost directly beneath the Auckland to Queenstown track. A round here asks very little of the day.

We can arrange tee times and transport. Eighteen holes and lunch before continuing south.

Auckland to Kāpiti Coast: 55 minutes

Kāpiti Coast to Queenstown: 1 hr 15

Hawke's Bay

Napier

Thirty five minutes from Auckland, and the simplest pause to add when the journey south continues later in the day. A round at Cape Kidnappers, lunch above the bay, or a vineyard should the party prefer.

It lies east of the direct track, so it asks a little more of the day than Marlborough. Best when the stop is the reason for the journey rather than an addition to it.

Auckland to Napier: 35 minutes

Napier to Queenstown: 1 hr 30

Aoraki Mt Cook

On the way south

A landing at Mt Cook removes more than six hours of driving from Queenstown and back. A scenic flight over the glacier, a picnic on the mountain, or for the more adventurous, glacier skiing and ice climbing.

For the keen aviator, Mt Cook Skiplanes and Helicopters offer a ski plane and a helicopter on the same day, with a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier. As a guide, for a party of four, the landing and a 45 minute scenic flight with glacier landing is roughly NZ$1,150 including taxes.

Auckland to Mt Cook: 1 hr 30

Mt Cook to Queenstown: 30 minutes

The aircraft remains yours until the journey is complete.

Why it is possible

The aircraft waits: There is no return service to make and no schedule to keep. You depart when the party is ready.

Smaller airfields: The strips that scheduled aircraft cannot use are precisely those that make a stop worth making.

The same day: Most stops ask for hours rather than nights. You still arrive in Queenstown the day you departed.

Owners and operators: Transparent pricing and complete accountability, from the team responsible for the aircraft.

Golf is not compulsory: Some of the party on the course, the remainder at the cellar door. The aircraft is the same either way.

Weather: Should a stop prove unworkable on the day, we reschedule, or refund any leg not flown.

So easy checking in at our own terminal.
